Homeschool Record Keeping in New Hampshire: What the Portfolio Actually Requires
New Hampshire asks for one notification when you start - and then a portfolio that carries the whole year: a log of reading materials, samples of your child's work, and an annual evaluation. Here's the whole picture in plain English.
The New Hampshire framework: notify once, keep the portfolio, evaluate annually
New Hampshire's home education law (RSA 193-A) asks families to do three things:
- File a one-time notification within 5 business days of starting your home education program, with a participating agency: the commissioner of education, your resident district superintendent, or the principal of a nonpublic school.
- Maintain a portfolio consisting of a log that designates by title the reading materials used, plus samples of your child's writings, worksheets, workbooks, and creative materials. Keep it for two years.
- Evaluate annually: a certified (or nonpublic school) teacher of your choosing reviews the portfolio and discusses it with you or your child, or your child takes a national achievement test, or you use another mutually agreed method. You keep the results - nothing is routinely submitted.

What an evaluator wants to see in a New Hampshire portfolio
- The reading log, by title - the statute names it specifically; a running book list is the cleanest possible answer.
- Work samples across the year - writings, worksheets, and creative work showing progress commensurate with age and ability.
- Dated, regular evidence - a portfolio that clearly grew over months, not a pile assembled the week before.
