Tricky Subjects, Answered

Does Read-Aloud Time Count as Reading?

Yes. Reading aloud to your child is reading instruction - vocabulary, comprehension, story structure, attention span, all of it. Read-aloud titles belong on your book list, and evaluators expect to see them there. Here's how to log them, and the one situation where a read-aloud list alone isn't enough.

Why it counts

Reading instruction isn't only a child decoding words on their own. Being read to at a level above what they can decode is how children meet richer vocabulary and harder ideas than their own reading level allows - which is why classroom teachers do read-alouds through middle school. States that ask for reading records ask for what was read, not who held the book. Florida's statute, for example, requires a log that includes titles of reading materials - read-alouds go straight in.

Do audiobooks count?

Same answer: yes. An audiobook is a read-aloud with someone else's voice. Log the title and author like any other book. If it feels worth noting, add how it was read - "finished the audiobook in the car" - but nobody requires that detail.

How to log it

"Read two chapters of Charlotte's Web aloud - she narrated the fair scene back."

"Audiobook: The Cricket in Times Square, ch. 5-7, in the car."

"He read Frog and Toad to ME tonight."

Two records cover it: the title on your running book list, and an occasional one-line log entry when something happened worth keeping - a narration, a big reaction, a finished book.

The honest caveat

For an older student, some evaluators want evidence of the child's own reading skill, not just exposure to books. A fourth grader's records that show only books read TO them leave that question open. The fix is cheap: keep both on the list, and mark which is which - "(read-aloud)" after the title does it. Independent readers, read-alouds, and audiobooks together make the strongest reading record there is.

Your book list builds itself

In The Homeschool Log you snap a book cover and the title, author, and reading level fill in. By evaluation time, your year's reading list is a printable page instead of a memory exercise.
