Does Screen Time Count as School?
Educational screen time counts like any other instruction. State laws care about what was taught, not whether it arrived on paper or a screen. The whole question comes down to logging the content by name - and being honest about the difference between a lesson and background noise.
What counts
- Structured programs. A math app working through fractions, a typing course, a language app streak, an online class with assignments. These are curriculum - log them like curriculum.
- Documentaries and educational video. A volcano documentary, a nature series, a history channel deep-dive your kid chose. Instruction - especially when a conversation or a drawing follows.
- Research your child drives. An hour of "how do submarines work" videos with questions afterward is real learning. Log what they chased and what stuck.
How to log it
"Two Khan Academy lessons - equivalent fractions." → Math
"Volcano documentary, then drew the eruption cycle from memory." → Science
"20 min typing practice - hit 25 wpm." → Typing
Name the program or the topic, and when there's evidence - a completed level, a drawing, a narration - note it. That one habit is what makes screen-based learning stand up in a portfolio next to workbook pages.
The honest test
Active beats background. A documentary your child watched, talked about, or drew from is school. A TV playing while they built LEGO is not - even if it was technically about dolphins. The line to hold in your records: log engagement, not minutes of glow. If you couldn't say what they got from it, don't log it. Your records stay credible, and credible records are the entire point.
One more thing worth logging: the ratio
Families using screen-heavy curriculum sometimes worry their log will "look like too much screen time." A dated log solves the worry for you: when every entry names what was learned, a reviewer sees fractions, typing, and volcanoes - not screens. The medium disappears behind the learning, which is exactly where it belongs.
