Tricky Subjects, Answered

How Do You Log PE for Homeschool?

One line: what they did, and roughly how long. "30 min swim lesson - worked on freestyle breathing." That's a complete PE record. The interesting questions are what counts, and how to keep team sports from wrecking your attendance count.

What counts as PE

More than you'd think. Swim lessons, bike rides, hikes, martial arts, dance class, gymnastics, a backyard obstacle course, jump rope, a family soccer scrimmage, skating, rock climbing. If your child moved their body with some purpose, it's physical education. Several states require PE by name - Washington and Maine both list it, and Pennsylvania requires health and physical education - so a running PE record answers a real requirement, not a made-up one.

How to log it

"45 min at the trampoline park - flips and conditioning."

"Bike ride to the park, 3 miles round trip."

"Karate - earned her yellow stripe."

Name the activity, add minutes if your state counts hours, and note a milestone when there is one. You don't need a lesson plan or a fitness goal. If your state tracks instructional hours, jot the minutes as you go - reconstructing "about how much PE did we do in October" in June is the part that hurts.

The trap: team sports and your day count

Here's the one that trips people up. Soccer practice is real PE - but if Sunday's practice is the only thing you log that day, your records now claim Sunday was a school day. An evaluator reading "180 days" where twenty of them are just team practice will notice, and so will you when the attendance register looks wrong.

The fix: treat sports that run on their own schedule as extracurricular. Log them - they belong in the record and they're great portfolio material - but don't let them create school days by themselves. In The Homeschool Log you mark a subject as extracurricular once, and from then on its entries keep showing in reports while staying out of your day count and instructional hours automatically.

PE logs itself in one line a day

The Homeschool Log keeps your daily log, hours, and attendance - and the extracurricular flag keeps soccer Sundays out of your school-day count without you thinking about it.
