Tricky Subjects, Answered

Does Cooking Count as School?

Yes - when you can name what was learned. The same afternoon in the kitchen can be math, science, reading, or home economics. The difference between "counts" and "padding" is one specific sentence in your log.

What the kitchen actually teaches

How to log it

"Halved a muffin recipe - fractions with measuring cups." โ†’ Math

"Fed the sourdough starter, compared bubbles to yesterday's photo." โ†’ Science

"Planned and cooked Tuesday dinner start to finish." โ†’ Home Ec

File the entry under the subject the learning belongs to, not under a catch-all. A photo of the flour-dusted result makes a great work sample - portfolios aren't only worksheets.

The honest line

Not every dinner is school, and your records shouldn't claim otherwise. "Made dinner" logged daily with nothing learned reads as padding, and anyone reviewing records can tell. The test: name the skill that was practiced. On the days you can, log it with confidence. On the days it was just dinner, let it be dinner.

Making it a real subject

If cooking is a steady part of your homeschool, give it its own subject - "Baking," "Home Ec," "Kitchen Science" - so a year of entries accumulates under one name. In The Homeschool Log you add any subject you want in seconds, set a grade level on it, and it flows into reports like Math does.

One sentence while the muffins bake

The Homeschool Log takes a line and a photo and files kitchen learning into real records - by subject, with the rest of your year.
